Installation Instructions for Halogen Track System

WARNING:

1. Although this Track System can be easily installed yourself, we recommend that installation should be done by a local licensed electrician.

2. Always turn off the power supply to the ceiling outlet before installation. We ask that you should test if the power had been turned off by an approved testing device before actually installing this system.

Installation Instructions:

  1. Decide what track configuration you prefer (see also pictures below). It could be in ceiling mounting or ceiling/wall mounting. Corners are provided for you to make the track turn and to stretch your imagination.

  2. Make sure the tracks are close enough to connect to the Transformer using the Connecting Wires (12" shipped).  Connections can be made at any points along the track.

  3. (For 3-fixture systems, skip this step and go to #4) Mark locations on the ceiling to anchor the Hanging Kits (depending on model purchased, generally starting from the corner is recommended,). Mark the corner position on the ceiling first and trace two lines at a right angle (90-degree) to each other beginning from the corner mark. Mark the position of the Hanging Kits on the lines and anchor them. We recommend that Hanging Kits should not be more than 25" apart (20"or less recommended) and they should be anchored near both ends of a corner (8"or less from the corner mark recommended).

  4. Anchor all Hanging Kits, 20" - 25" apart (see picture). You need to drill a 3mm hole for each Hanging Kit and insert the anchors until they are flushed with the ceiling. Use a Philips screw driver (with longer tip) to insert the screws (included) into the anchor through the middle tubes of the kits.

  5. Build the track using the 20" sections provided. You need to decide how long and in what configuration you prefer. Then, you connect all track sections as shown. Caution: Make sure all Track Sections are tightly screwed together and the connections are close to a Hanging Kit. Otherwise, sparks may occur and damage the connections permanently.

  6. Secure the track onto the Hanging Kits. If the track turns, you need to secure one side first, install the corners, hook up the other side, and mount the other side onto the Hanging Kits. Adjustments may be needed for both sides to match and form a 90-degree angle.

  7. Install all Corners (if any, depending on model purchased) and End Caps. (Note: For 4x or 5x fixtures systems  in a straight line configuration, which will result in having male ends on one end of the track, the holes on the End Caps may be a little shallow for the male end of the Track Sections/Conductor Rods to go in. You may need to screw the male ends into the End Caps instead of inserting them in. You may also have to drill  deeper holes on the End Caps to secure it).

  8. Hang the Fixture Heads at locations of your desire using the built-in clips or screws (for 174, 175, 176, 179, IP, and IW Fixtures), but not to upset the balance. Do not put any additional weight on the tracks! Install all MR16/JC bulbs provided by inserting them into the Fixture Heads gently and completely. Avoid direct contact with the bulbs by handling them with a non-linen cloth!

  9. Mount the transformer (see Instructions To Mount Transformer below).

  10. Connect the tracks and the Transformer using the two Connecting Wires provided (see also Instructions To Mount Transformer).

  11. Finish! Turn the power back on!

WARNINGS:

  1. Do not extend or expand this system without consulting a qualified person first!

  2. Do not add more fixtures to the system than specified! For example, a 105W transformer can light up 5x20W (5 or less 20W rated bulbs for a total of 100W), 3x35W (total of 105W), or 2x50W (total of 100W). For a 200W transformer (purchased separately), it can light up 10x20W (total of 200W), 5x35W (total of 175W), or 4x50W (total of 200W). To summarize, your system's total light output cannot exceed the wattage rating of the transformer.

  3. Do not use any conductor to bridge the track at any time (see Diagram C below)! Human contact is fine!

  4. Do not hang any decorative objects on the track!

  5. When replacing bulbs, turn off the power and allow the system to cool for at least 10 minutes before replacing the bulbs.

  6. Do not install this system at or near any objects that are combustible! Drapes or curtains should be kept away from this system at all time.

Why didn't the system turn on after installation?

  1. Check bulbs that are not lit to see if they are completely inserted into the lamp holders or any of the two prongs is/are broken.

  2. If all bulbs are not lit, check power source (ceiling outlet) to see if all connections are tight and secured. Use a electricity gauge to find out if those wires from the ceiling box are "live". If they are not, you have a bad ceiling box.

  3. If there is electricity from the box, use the gauge to check the Terminal Blocks (at the bottom of the transformer) to see if they are "live". If there is no electricity going to the Blocks, you have a bad transformer, report DOA immediately (customer@solairco.com).

  4. If everything checks out fine, check the Connecting Wires to see if they are touching the Connectors properly. Make sure they are tight and secured. If necessary, separate the Connectors from the Connecting Wires and re-attach them to make sure the bare wires are touching the screws in the Connectors.

  5. If the connections are fine, report DOA immediately (customer@solairco.com )!

Can you add more light fixtures?

In general, do not add more fixtures than specified. Consult a qualified person, a licensed electrician or our support department staff, before your project. The transformer is the most important part of the system. It controls/limits the maximum number of light fixtures that you can install.

For example, a 105W transformer can light up 5x20W (5 or less 20W rated bulbs for a total of 100W), 3x35W (total of 105W), or 2x50W (total of 100W). For a 200W transformer (purchase or upgrade separately), it can light up 10x20W (total of 200W), 5x35W (total of 175W), or 4x50W (total of 200W). To summarize, your system's total light output cannot exceed the wattage rating of the transformer.

_______________________________________________________

Important precautions!

  • Do not over-load the transformer (see above example)

  • Do not handle light bulbs at any time while the lamp/system is on (for details)

  • Wait at least 10 minutes after the lamp has been turned off before you can touch the bulb (for details)

  • Dust off the system frequently

  • Do not use metal or conductor to clean the system

  • Do not use wet cloth/paper to clean the system, especially when the system is on. Electrical sparks or shocks may result.

  • Before you clean or maintain the system, turn off the power. Very Important!

How to expand the system?

  • (Recommended) Purchase a more powerful transformer (200W), if you plan on adding more fixtures (see example).

  • Purchase the necessary number of 20" track sections in pair and choose F/M, F/F, or M/M. Note: F/F and M/M are used only in special configurations.

  • Purchase the fixtures and more hanging kits

  • If you plan on making the track turn, purchase small and/or large corners

Adjustable Hanging Device

SpecL18-HM.jpg (27352 bytes)

Sometimes, you may need to hang the track down from a high ceiling and standard plastic hanger (L18-HK, 4") is not usable, you will need to purchase the adjustable metal chrome hanger (L18-HM, 7"- 12" or longer) to support the track.

This adjustable hanger is specially designed for high ceiling installation where the anchoring surface is high above the track. With purchase of the necessary parts (L18-MF5), this adjustable hanger can be extended from 7" to 27" (or in 20" increments). See picture for more details!

How halogen lighting can save energy

The reason that halogen lighting can save money and energy is very simple. Halogen light bulbs are constructed exactly like regular light bulbs, but they contain different gases under higher pressure and different filaments inside the bulbs. When the filaments inside are fed with electricity, with the filament's natural resistance to electricity and combined with the special gases inside, they are burnt at a much higher temperature than regular bulbs as a result and therefore emit more light.

As a reminder, because halogen bulbs operate at a very high temperature, do not touch the bulb with bare hand. To change the bulb, use a non-linen cloth to remove the bulb after at lest 10 minutes or when the bulb is sufficiently cooled.

 Use of Dimmer

In general, use of dimmer on our Track Light Systems are not advisable. Please consult a qualified person or a licensed electrician before you go to purchase one. Best of all, speak to a customer representative from the manufacturer of the dimmer. They will let you know if they have the right dimmer for our low-voltage Track Light Systems. We do not guarantee compatibility with any dimmer. The use of dimmer on our systems may void your warranty.

The transformers that come with our Track Light Systems are hardwired Magnetic Low-Voltage (MLV) transformers. Do not use regular 120V incandescent dimmers for MLV lighting systems. MLV transformers may not be compatible with certain electronic-based dimmers also.

For 3-way and 4-way control using a dimmer, you must consult a local licensed electrician before installation. You must read the dimmer's specifications very carefully before deciding which one to buy. It is extremely important to ground all switches and dimmers. Professional installation is recommended!

We cannot warrant compatibility with any dimmer, nor can we recommend any brand of dimmer. Use of dimmer on our lighting system is solely at your own risk. We will not replace or exchange any damaged transformer due to the use of dimmer. Certain dimmers do not work well with this transformer that it may make "hum" noise. Applying a little more dimming may mitigate this problem.

The chart below shows compatibility of dimmers. This is just for reference only and in no way should be construed as guideline to different dimmer installations. Dimmer specifications can vary from one brand to another or from one model to another. Please consult a local licensed electrician before installation.

    Use of Plug-in Transformer

It is not uncommon that in certain situation you want to use plug-in transformer to power your track system. Since our track systems come with hardwired transformers (attached to ceiling box needed), you need to tell us your preference (trade-off) during checkout. Also, you need to make sure there is enough Connecting Wires (2' shipped in system) to connect the plug-in transformer to the track. You can go to our "Track Accessories" page to purchase enough Connecting Wire to finish your setup.

To purchase the plug-in transformer, please visit our "Cable Accessories" page. If you need heavier gauge Connecting Wire, you can purchase our "Thicker" cable instead.

3-way and 4-way Control Installations

For existing 3-way and 4-way control circuits, please consult a local licensed electrician before installation.  3-way and 4-way control installations are having 2 and 3 wall switches controlling the lighting system respectively. It is extremely important to ground all switches and dimmers. Professional installation is definitely recommended! We will not replace or exchange damaged transformer due to wrong installation.

In general, 3-way and 4-way control new installation must be done by a local licensed electrician, especially when installed along with a low-voltage (12V) dimmer. If you choose to do it yourself, you must read the dimmer manufacturer's installation instructions with care. A small mishap can damage our Track Light Systems permanently.

Maintenance

  • Turn off power before taking apart, if necessary, the system to avoid short-circuiting the system. If not followed, damage to the system and, especially the transformer, will be irreversible.
  • Clean and dust the fixtures and track regularly. Preferably once every month. More often if the system is located near a kitchen or high traffic area.
  • Use fine scrub or non-linen cloth lightly soaped with mild and diluted detergent to clean the system. Do not submerge any parts or fixtures into water. Clean and wait for the fixtures or parts to dry completely before re-installing them.
